Frit Shading with Scandia Wood
Date: Sunday, September 22, 2019, 9:00 - Noon
Location: Classroom 3
Using pattern cut pieces of Oceanside CompatibleTM sheet glass and coordinating Frit, participants will create a still-life painting, based upon a photo supplied during the workshop. This technique allows Fusers to continue working on their paintings through multiple firings, adding layers of Frit, just as painters layer their canvases with paint. The result is added depth, dimension, and soft-focus realism, as shown in these photos of glass paintings here that were fired through 2—4 applications of Frit shading.
Participants will have an opportunity to work on their painting through one firing with guidance from the instructor. After the workshop pieces are fired, Fusers will complete their paintings independently upon returning home, drawing upon their newly acquired skills and referencing the workshop handout.
No drawing or painting skills are required for this technique, but glass cutting skills are highly recommended, as students will be required to cut out numerous glass pattern pieces to create their paintings’ base layers prior to adding any Frit for shading.
Students should bring: basic glass cutting tools, NIOSH approved mask/respirator, notebook and pen.
