STAINED GLASS RESTORATION SEMINAR
with Art Femenella

The slide/lecture portion of the workshop will identify the primary conservation problems encountered when restoring historic stained glass windows. Panel deflection, broken glass, accretion of dirt, fading paint, structural concerns and the adverse effects of protective glazing will be discussed. The well-intentioned but often unacceptable methods for rectifying these problems will be presented, as well as the current conservation philosophy, materials and methods.

My typical format is using a power point presentation with no set lecture. I show slides and talk about them. I highly encourage audience participation.

Attendees can send pictures ahead of time for me to address in my lecture.

"The Fruits of Commerce"
by LaFarge
"The Fruits of Commerce" window, an example of John LaFarge's finest work, measures 6' 10" tall and 9' 7" wide, from the Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC Classically drawn figures populate a riverside scene of commerce, fishing, shipping, and transportation. Pressed jewels and assorted chunks of glass are fused by means of a low fire enamel to a piece of clear glass to form the bounty pouring forth from the cornucopia. Window was completely restored to include: documentation; cleaning; edge-gluing of broken glass; design and implementation of custom support system to rectify multiple, folding borders at bottom of window.
